Telling the truth
Telling the Truth is one of the categories in the I Ching. It is called WU WANG – without falsehood, untruthfulness, dishonesty or insincerity. Confucius elaborated on this by saying ‘Truthfulness is the Tao of heaven’.
So it is important.
As we all know it is also a fundamental precept in every religion principally because lying, dishonesty, insincerity and falsity are acts of hurt. The I Ching further stipulates that one should tell the truth and seek honest actions irrespective of the consequences – what you may believe may happen
“one should not have any anticipation of good fortune or misfortune, blessing or calamity”
Confucius went a step further
“Truthfulness need not deal with artificiality as a healthy person need not deal with medicine”
All well and good. But what impact does all this have on spiritual experience?
It is one of life’s little conundrums that the truth is a lot easier to remember than a lie. If we lie or are dishonest we, over a period of time, have to fabricate a huge web of concocted stories to support the lie we are leading. One lie leads to another until we almost have to concoct an entire novel of falsehood. And we have to remember it all and make sure it is consistent. The truth needs none of this elaborate charade, all we need to do is recall what happened, it is easy.
Telling lies is a strain.
The strain shows in heightened Emotion and then illness. The continually dishonest and those who lie are very often under huge pressure and emotional turmoil trying to remember this fantasy world they have created. And of course this pressure, this emotional turmoil ensures they are never going to get a spiritual experience of any sort. It blocks the way completely.
If, of course, you get yourself in such a frazzle with all the lying and high Emotion that the appalling stress eventually gives you an experience, whatever you get will be none too pleasant. The composer has a habit of turning our actions on our self – the demons will undoubtedly be out in force.
