In 2010 in Xiamen, Fujian, I chatted with an old man who told me that he was chosen by the god to take up the planchette, a forked wooden cutting of a tree, which the medium held in his hands to write out the characters of the possessing god’s utterances. The strange thing about it was that, up until then, he was illiterate.
