Thoughts through Space – Sir Hubert Wilkins and Harold M Sherman
On the night of the 2lst, which was one of our contact nights, I was able to sit and review the events of the day. Sherman recorded:
"Installing of engine completed, and testing of it carried out today. (The engine had been mounted on the framework of the plane, and some of the parts had been tested although the engine had not been "run-up.") Very difficult job - feel that the weather delayed your work one day-someone has skinned hand and finger . . see great clouds of smoke or vapour about the plane ….. use made of part of damaged engine. You brought back to Aklavik several boxes of cigars-some member of crew requested you to get some article – can’t make out what it is -someone has toothache or sore condition of the mouth."
Sherman had not only listed much of what I had been thinking-of the engine and the general conditions-but he had also added several things which were conspicuous in my mind, but which I had no deliberate intention of transferring to him. For instance, I had had a tooth filled while at Edmonton, and the tooth was still giving me some trouble. My mouth was sore, and the tooth "jumped" every time I trod heavily or received a jar-in fact, it had been troubling me all day. I had brought from Edmonton a special box of cigars for Wilson, one for myself, and one for the members of the crew in general.
