Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
“The images are often fragmentary or symbolic and have to be interpreted by the conscious mind as one gets them.”
This is why most experimenters have a sitter who takes notes as they talk, or a tape recorder or similar that can just take down what is being said, as the interpretation by the conscious mind blocks the experience or hampers it considerably.
It was Vaughan’s observations on these aspects in the 1960s that helped improve the process as it is now.
A description of the experience
Patterns of Prophecy – Alan Vaughan
The process of giving a psychic reading is somewhat like making up a story. As one talks, images begin to appear in the mind's eye.
Verbal thoughts may come also (so-called clairaudience).
Names or initials may identify people whom one sees in his mind's eye.
The images are often fragmentary or symbolic and have to be interpreted by the conscious mind as one gets them.
The impressions, once started, begin to flow as the conscious mind yields up its control.
Sometimes the images are accompanied by a feeling of whether they pertain to the past, present, or future; at other times this distinction is jumbled and inaccurate.
The solar plexus area often seems to be intimately involved in this process. One feels impressions there, or gets a gut feeling that something one sees is correct.
The flow of impressions tends to come in spurts of a few Minutes, then dries up, then returns as something else of interest flashes into the mind.................
It would seem that a flow of symbols can be established only when there is a certain amount of psychic compatibility. A lack of this compatibility can prove embarrassing, as when a sitter brings a stenographer with him for a sitting but the medium can get impressions only about the stenographer.
