Uxmal - Mayan - House of the Turtles
Identifier
011697
Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
The House of the Turtles is so called because it has a frieze of turtles around the top of the building. The House is quite small and has a Puuc style colonnette design with 3 part mouldings. Each turtle had a different marking on its back.
The guide books say that the design imitates the wooden construction techniques of Mayan thatched houses, but it may also have been imitating a 'sacred grove'.
The three windows is deliberate - or three doors - the sun, the moon and the stars.
