Isabella Tree – Sliced Iguana
Pedro was a mountain bike guide….. he was tall, dark and disconcertingly good looking and represented yet another strand in the extraordinary racial weave of modern Mexico. Both sets of his grandparents had come to Mexico as traders from the Lebanon.
Pedro had a typically wild look in his eye as well. Humberto had once taken Pedro to Real de Catorce and the consequences had been legendary.
He’d taken a dozen peyote buttons in one go, ripped off all his clothes down to his underpants and wandered naked around the desert for a night and a day howling like a wolf.
It was true, Pedro interjected, when Humberto began to tell me the story; he’d seen in the dark – plants, insects, animals, rocks, earth, dust, soil – everything was glowing and alive, and though he’d been wandering through scorpion infested mesquite bushes and spiny agaves there’d been hardly a scratch on him when he came round and had to make a mad scramble for his spare clothes in the car.
