"Temple I is 145 foot high and was built around AD 700. It contains the tomb of Jade Jaguar, so called because of a jade carving of a crouching jaguar found there, a replica of which is found in the Tikal Museum. It became one of the richest finds ever encountered in Tikal with jade ornaments, ceramics and other burial items that took days to disinter by the archaeological team. The entire front of the comb is decorated with a seated individual, presumably in homage to the person buried below.
This temple is now off limits to visitors to protect it from decay. There are three temple chambers on the summit of the temple with corbel vaults, elegantly carved sapodilla wood lintels once supported the walls above the doorways."
