Background
Psalter world map is another lovely example of a spiritual map which is now conserved at the British Library in London. It is a small map about 9.5 cm high, but still shows a lot of detail. It was produced in about 1260; the author is unknown. It is clearly spiritual in nature – the huge figure of Christ looms above the egg accompanied by two angels. Around the rim are the usual ocean and islands in the cone. The map is based on the T-O shape and has symbolism now recognisable in spiritual maps for the cities and palaces and castles. The top of the map is ‘East’ the orient, the centre is again Jerusalem. To the East is the Garden of Eden. Some of the little cone mountains are clearly visible.
