A description of the experience
The Quest of the Overself – Paul Brunton
It might be well to answer an oft asked question and confess that I did not see the famous Rope Trick, although I wandered vainly through the length and breadth of India and found no fakir able or willing to work this seeming miracle............ but if I cannot recount this feat, I can recount its explanation as derived from one of my teachers, who saw a similar marvel in his youth.
He definitely states that – where it is not a piece of conjuring and jugglery – it is a feat of hypnotism, an operation practised by a more powerful mind upon a crowd of weaker ones.
The fact that when a photograph was taken, no boy could be seen climbing the rope in the picture, is one proof of his testament.
The objection that 500 people in a crowd could not be mass hypnotised is overruled by him on the principle that 500 weaker minds will always yield to a single stronger one, or in arithmetical terms, 500 multiplied by 0 still equals 0.
