Another story told to me by a physician …..
Years ago, during surgery for a ruptured appendix, she had a cardiac arrest. During the resuscitation, she had an experience of seeing her deceased mother and brother, both of whom seemed to reassure her that they were okay and she would be, too. She had dismissed the experience as a dream until she heard one of my talks and began to reflect on the ways that her life and attitudes had changed after the experience. In particular, she saw her profession in a whole new way and became much more humanitarian in her practice of medicine. She is an example of someone who didn't change professions, but changed the way that she did her work.
