A symbol of ‘illumination’, meaning wisdom and understanding. In effect the lantern relates to types of spiritual experience – invisible input – wisdom and also invisible input – inspiration. If hung outside a temple, it can indicate that this is a place where illumination can be obtained. If a mudang carries a lantern, she may either be a teacher or she may herself be enlghtened - or both.
