Background
A description of the experience
POEMS OF SURDAS translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
Madhav, even those who haven't a shred of worth
are hesitant to come to you for aid:
Even though they lack all trace of strength or grandeur
they shrink from relying on your grace.
A dumb blade of grass: if someone swept down a river
reaches out a hand and grasps,
That grass holds as fast to its roots as it can
and surrenders its tortured self if it must.
You, Lord, you're unbested, untamed, you rule the world,
while I am unlettered and unwise:
Nothing can ever hinder you, nothing can impinge,
and think of this poor inundated soul!
Night and day I have to bear the barbs of ridicule
and that's why I have come to you to ask,
Says Surdas: Who, after singing of the mercies
that stream forth from your feet, was ever saved?
