Frederick Soddy: The Scientist as Prophet – Professor Mansel Davies [May 1991]
At Aberystwyth and Aberdeen Soddy was personally happy. Both places had communities strongly imbued with Calvinism. Soddy's idealism, which made him such an uncomfortable colleague on many occasions, is dearly seen in his farewell address to the students at Aberdeen:
You come here ostensibly to 'get on'--how I loathe the words--to out-distance your competitors in the race of life, to win for yourself a position of power and importance in the world that calls itself great. But what have these tawdry ideals of bygone, far-off, unhappy days to do with you? While you are here, live in a world which is great, in the realm of expanding ideas and the rapidly widening horizons of youth.
