Frederick Soddy: The Scientist as Prophet – Professor Mansel Davies [May 1991]
Other examples of Soddy’s extraordinarily inventive mind are the models he produced approximating to what later became known as the Wankel engine. Sir Charles Frank, FRS, Bristol, remembers clearly Soddy showing a 'Wankel' model to a group of students, and himself recalls much of the not-so-simple constructional detail.
Other indications of Soddy's strong streak of originality can be noted. There are
- two papers in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, 178 (1942), 377; 182A (1943), 113, on the summation of infinite series;
- five letters in Nature (1936, 1937) on multiplicities of touching (kissing) circles, a number of the results being expressed in verse form;
- eight patents are listed in Pioneer;
- and in his eightieth year Soddy designed a mechanical means for solving cubic equations.
