MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN THE 1972 SINGLEHANDED TRANSATLANTIC YACHT RACE - Original Text - Glin Bennet
The performance of thirty-four of the fifty-five competitors in the Observer sponsored 1972 singlehanded Transatlantic yacht race was studied by means of a daily record of activity, progress, and subjective state and/or a semistructured interview at the finish.
Sleep patterns, and general medical problems are described.
The frequent psychological reactions—forgetfulness, errors in navigation and handling the boat, auditory, visual, and spatial hallucinations, mood changes—were shown to bear a time relationship to adverse circumstances in the external environment.
The importance of early detection of impairment of function for the ever- increasing numbers engaging in outdoor activities, and others who need to sustain a high level of vigilance and decision-making ability in the course of their work is stressed.
