Sing a song of sixpence
Identifier
007036
Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Ergot was often found on rye – the LSD like fungus that causes hallucinations. Thus there could have been a literal element to this rhyme.
The nose can sometimes be a symbol of the cone.
A description of the experience
From Traditional Nursery Rhymes [collected by Michael Foss]
Sing a song of sixpence
A pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie
When the pie was opened
The birds began to sing
Was not that a dainty dish
To set before the King?
The king was in his counting house
Counting out his money
The queen was in her parlor
Eating bread and honey.
The maid was in the garden
Hanging up the clothes
And down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose!
