Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
The description is taken from a more general description which describes what happens on birth. Kirman explains that attributes and functions are taken from each of the ‘planets’ – the Intelligence packages and allocated to the person, thus this is using astrological concepts in its explanation of how personality is formed and how we get our character and functions
I think the text may have suffered a little in translation, as Corbin was French and although I am certain his translation may have been good, I’m not so sure about the translation of the translation. It is nevertheless very interesting
A description of the experience
Shaikh Muhammad Karim Khan Kirmani – Irshad al-‘awamm [translated by Henry Corbin and Nancy Pearson]
His body contains one handful of the subtle matter of the first heaven (that is of the moon) and his spirit was made from this handful of Heaven;
one handful of the subtle matter of the second Heaven (that of Mercury) and his meditative power was made from this handful of Heaven;
his imaginative power was made from a handful of the third heaven (that of Venus);
one handful of the fourth heaven (that of the Sun) constituted his consubstantial matter;
one handful of the fifth Heaven (that of Mars) constituted his representative faculty;
a handful of the sixth Heaven (that of Jupiter) constituted his cognitive power;
one handful of the seventh Heaven (that of Saturn) constituted his individual intellect;
one handful of the eighth heaven (the Heaven of the Fixed Stars, the Firmament) constituted his soul.
And finally, his body contains a handful of the subtle matter of the Throne (the Empyrean); from this is formed his essential and fundamental reality
