The Eye of the Wind – Sir Peter Scott
Another story [my mother] would tell whenever the subject of telepathy was raised is also recorded in her diary.
Early in 1912, news came that Amundsen, who had set off for the Antarctic after my father's expedition and without telling him, had reached the South Pole before him. On March 11th, when my father was returning from the Pole and the bad weather had set in, he wrote,
"Oates is near the end. What we will do, God knows."
On that same day my mother's diary, which she was keeping especially for him, begins:
"Peter said this morning, 'Mummy, is Amundsen a good man?' I said 'Yes, I think he is.' Then he said, 'Amundsen and Daddy both got to the Pole. Daddy has stopped working now."'
My father probably died about 29th March, 1912, but this was not known until February 1913.
