Background
Schubert held a hopeless passion for his pupil, the Countess Karoline Eszterházy, but the only work he specifically dedicated to her was his Fantasy in F minor for piano duet (D. 940). His friend Eduard von Bauernfeld penned the following verse, which appears to reference Schubert's unrequited sentiments:
In love with a Countess of youthful grace,
—A pupil of Galt's; in desperate case
Young Schubert surrenders himself to another,
And fain would avoid such affectionate pother
A description of the experience
Franz Schubert: Fantasy In F Minor, D940 - Louis Lortie And Hélène Mercier, Piano 4-Hands
Louis Lortie made his third appearance on the stage of Koerner Hall in February of 2013, joined this time by fellow French-Canadian pianist, Helene Mercier.
Lortie and Mercier have been a piano team since the 1980s and have collaborated on a number of critically-acclaimed recordings. The ease that comes with years of playing and performing together was most evident in this concert, and the conclusion of their performance brought the Koerner Hall crowd to its feet.
