Sandy was a 38 year old public school teacher
When Sandy volunteered to complete a Kundalini Research Network pilot project questionnaire, she offered to be part of the "interested control group." She did not think she had had any mystical, spiritual, paranormal, or kundalini experiences.
However, on the questionnaire, Sandy reported having had numerous psychic experiences for at least ten years.
She also reported having moderately intense, repeated symptoms associated with kundalini awakening such as rushes of energy up the spine. These sensations had been going on for more than eight years. She also reported having mystical experiences and bliss episodes from time to time over the years while she was meditating.
When I informed Sandy that her score on the part of the questionnaire that identified people as either "controls" or "experiencers" had moved her into the experiencer category, she objected, saying that everybody had the types of experiences she was having. Suggesting that this wasn't necessarily so, I described the pattern of slow, gradual increase in experiences over a number of years and explained how this could be stimulated by regular, long-term meditation such as hers.
Sandy said she'd think about what I'd said. The next time I saw her, she admitted that, after much reflection, and after talking openly with some of her closest friends, she had finally concluded that she probably was having STEs [spiritual experiences] and that they seemed to be following the pattern of slow, gradual increase over a period of years. For Sandy this was an amazing realization. She had previously believed that meditation-related spiritual and paranormal experiences were “normal” and that the types of experiences I call STEs included only earth-shattering experiences.
