A description of the experience
Andrew Lang – Cock Lane and Common sense
In the Salem witch mania, a case of levitation was reported by the Reverend Cotton Mather. He produced a cloud of witnesses, who could not hold the woman down. She would fly up.
Mr Mather sent the signed depositions to his opponent Mr Calef. But Calef would not believe, for he said, “the age of miracles is past”. Which was just the question at issue!
There is more information on this case in Beaumont’s Treatise of Spirits p148, London, 1705
