A description of the experience
The Jacques Romano story – Dr Berthold Eric Schwartz
From a newspaper clipping:
Getting into the realm of spiritualism, Mr Romano gave what he called a 'little demonstration.' A well-known citizen, at his direction, helped himself to a cigarette paper. The citizen wadded it up into a tiny ball and held it between his finger tips. Mr. Romano told him to think of somebody who was dead.
Then the demonstrator slowly spelled out the name 'J-O-H-N,' and said, 'that is the first name of the one you are thinking about.' The 'sitter' replied that it was.
'There was something wrong with his hands,' Mr. Romano said.
'He had two deformed fingers,' the man replied beginning to look startled.
Mr. Romano made several statements concerning events in the life of the dead man, and the astonished citizen admitted they were true. Then Romano made a crease in the little paper ball with his finger nail and ran a lead pencil along the crease. All this time the paper was in the sight of nearby watchers.
'Now open the paper,' he said.
The citizen did so and his face was a picture, as he read the word 'John' written in lead pencil and exclaimed: 'It is my father's handwriting!'
'I won't attempt to explain it,' he said later to his friends, 'but it is my father's handwriting all right.'
