SECOND EDITION
The Objectivity Of The Effluents Perceived In The Form Of Light In The Hypnotic State
some subjects acquire a momentary hyperexcitability of vision that allows them to see the ‘effluents’, the object of this study, in full light.
In Dr. Luys' department at Charity, I met a subject named Albert L., who enjoyed a high degree of this last faculty and who was also a draughtsman by profession, so that, thanks to the kindness of Dr Luys to whom I revealed this unique property, we were both in possession of a much superior working instrument to that used by our predecessors, since, instead of being forced to relate them to more or less vague descriptions, we could obtain drawings and even paintings to which the subject had the facility to bring all the desirable precision, with the simple precaution of restoring his eyes from time to time to the proper state…….
According to Mr Luys' observations using Albert L., the right side of the human body is generally blue in colour. Eyes, ears, nostrils, lips emit radiation of the same colour, and these irradiations are all the more intense when the subject is more vigorous. The left side emits red from the senses, and their intensity varies similarly with the condition of the subject.
Pushing his experiments into his professional occupations, Dr. Luys observed that, in hysterical male and female subjects, the coloration of the right side effluvium turns purple and that, in cases where paralysis occurs by the disappearance of nerve activity, the luminous colorations of the skin are dotted with blackheads. He also noted that the ocular scents persist for a few hours after death, and that, if the skull of a living animal is opened, the right lobe of the brain appears beautiful blue and the left lobe beautiful red, until life disappears completely, which shows that there is no crossover for this kind of action of the brain as for its motor and sensory actions.
When the hearing is hard, that is, when the person observed is more or less deaf, the light radiation from the ear decreases considerably. A fish living out of the water emits radiation similar to that of other animals; but when it is in the water, the radiation becomes invisible., …. Blue effluents also emanate from the north pole of a magnet and the positive pole of a battery, while the negative poles of a magnet and a battery give red effluents; the induction coils are covered with a yellow glow when they are crossed by a current.
All these observations needed to be verified many times before they could be admitted without reservation, especially since I recognized, through experiments methodically pursued for more than fifteen years with many subjects, that the descriptions that these subjects gave colorings were not always consistent, the same subject even varying sometimes in his statements from one moment to another, either under the influence of a modification of his hypnotic state, or under the influence of a different orientation from the object that emits the effluviums.
What is constant, what must be considered as proven in the same way as this or that historical fact that we have not been able to witness ourselves, is the existence of a luminous sensation perceived by a large number of people under the conditions we have indicated.
