Albert De Rochas D'Aiglun - Levitation of the human body
Father Petit, …….., wrote to me recently:
"What is important to determine in all these phenomena is the cause that produces them. This cause being complex, like all agents of this nature, must be studied by the subject himself at the same time as by the operator if the phenomenon is produced by a foreign medium; otherwise, it is because the subject is more or less medium and it is for him a duty to study his sensations, as far as he is capable of doing it.
"With regard to levitation, I experienced it in two different ways in a church: once it was a simple uprising that I attribute to the dilation of the astral body; another time there was transport.
"I felt, in the first case, an intense tingling in my hands and feet with the feeling of a force escaping; in the second case, the feeling was quite different, it seemed to me that a strange force was attracting me to the altar ([1]).
"I think that, in the case of transport, the subject's mediumnistic force is welded to a higher force that carries him away. If fear had not seized me, if I had not struggled, I probably would have gone over the gate of the sanctuary. My fear was so great that I almost got sick...
"It costs me to talk about myself, I do so only with reluctance; but it would be desirable if people to whom some phenomena of this nature occur, accidentally or not, admit it in all sincerity. This admission is very painful; therefore most people hide it carefully so as not to attract the reputation of hallucinatory or visionary, always unpleasant epithets.
"In any case, none of these phenomena are miraculous. Nothing in these facts, which unfortunately warm up the imagination, is produced in derogation of the laws of nature, but all of them are part of a higher law, which will eventually be formulated. Many more experiments will probably be needed before this goal is achieved. What is disconcerting is that the best theories are suddenly overwhelmed by an unknown factor that is impossible to determine."
[1] The Priest of Ars told us that the demon sometimes lifted him up in his bed. It is claimed that Eugene Vintras, the so-called prophet who lived in Tilly, about fifty years ago, rose from the ground in front of witnesses when he was praying.
