Background
The Battlefield WWI - Alfred Basel
A description of the experience
When the cannon’s red spittle
Whistles through limitless blue skies;
When scarlet and green forces crumble
In fiery heaps at the feet of a jeering king;
When an impossible madness grinds
A hundred thousand men into a smouldering mass;
Such woeful dead in the summer grass!
O Nature who makes saints of men
A God laughs away the finery
Of the holy see, the incense and golden
Goblets, a God who dozes to hosannas,
And then stirs when mothers gather
In grief, crying in their black hats
Offering him pennies from their pockets
