Redon, Odilon - the Flower series
Identifier

Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Redo painted numerous pictures of vases of flowers, each with a different vase, each with different flowers and often using flowers he grew from seed.
A vase of flowers takes on the symbolism of the pitcher and the flower. Thus there may be reason to think that Redon was actually painting people he knew in a symbolic way. The painting the Masked Anemone is so specific in its symbolism, I think it provides failry certain proof.
Redon knew both the symbolism of the flower and the symbolism of the vase of flowers, and he also appeared to know the symbolic meaning of each flower, which is extraordinary as there are a lot of flowers and a lot of meanings! My site attempts at the meaning of only a few key ones.
