Promethazine - Promethazine is sold under the brand names Phenergan , Promethegan, Romergan, Fargan, Farganesse, Prothiazine, Avomine, Atosil, Receptozine, Lergigan, and Sominex . It is a first-generation H1 receptor antagonist. It has a strong sedative effect and in some countries is prescribed for insomnia instead of benzodiazepines. It is available over the counter in a number of European countries as well as Australia, but by prescription in the United States
It is used as a sedative, for preoperative sedation, as an anti-allergic medicine to combat hay fever, for coughs, as a motion sickness remedy [with ephedrine], to combat morning sickness and to potentiate opiates. It has been combined with pethidine in a brand called Mepergan, a meperidine/promethazine combination. It has also been used in conjunction with codeine, in a syrup form.
