Background
The Cryogenian ice age was the most severe of any of the ice ages, however, certain organisms - for example tube worms, clams, and cyanobacteria - survived. An icy planet should reflect so much heat that it would stay frozen forever, if the rules stayed the same, but scientists hypothesise that plate tectonic movements created volcanic activity that heated up the surface, pumped out gases and reformed the atmosphere. At the end of this extinction event, the Cambrian period started – a period marked by a huge increase in life forms.

The more I examine the universe and study the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known we were coming
A description of the experience
The Poetic Edda
from Vafthrudnir's sayings
Odin said: 'Much I have travelled, much have I tried out
much have I tested the Powers;
which among men will live when the famous
Mighty Winter comes among men?'
Vafthrudnir said: 'Life and Lifthrasir, and they will hide
in Hoddmir's wood
they will have the morning dew for food
from them the generations will spring'
