Communication from ‘PB’ March 30th 1899 letter 338
I had a twin sister, for whom I felt a very great affection, much greater perhaps, than that generally found between brothers and sisters.
She was in the home of a friend, about 20 kilometres from my house, when I received one morning, a letter from the person with whom she was staying; it informed me that my sister was slightly indisposed, but in no danger of any kind.
In the evening of the same day, when I was sitting down at the table to have dinner with my young wife, I suddenly dropped my spoon, crying ‘Oh God! My poor sister is dead!’.
Unfortunately, it was only too true. I received, half an hour after this warning – if I may use this expression – a telegram informing me of her death, which no one had foreseen.
I am not signing my name, I have a horror of publicity.
