Background
Parrish’s most well-known art work is Daybreak which was produced in 1923. It features female figures in a landscape scene. The painting also has undertones of Parrish blue. Parrish was a pioneer of printing art for mass distribution and had tremendous commercial success with it. Daybreak, is 'still the most sold print in history'
The Moody Blues album The Present uses a variation of the Parrish painting Daybreak for its cover. The original painting of Daybreak sold in 2006 for US$7.6 million
"While much of Parrish's work was not seen in museums, it appealed to the masses. The Art Nouveau movement brought about the wide-scale use of printing for advertisement. Technology afforded the use of several colors and larger font styles, making lithography a very popular art form.
Parrish's art enchanted millions. His work in advertising, greeting cards, magazine covers, prints and calendars hung in common places such as dormitories, living rooms, dens, coffee shops, hotel lobbies, department stores and laundromats. The Great Depression didn't discourage the artist, as making copies of fine art became more popular during this time. Parrish's fantasy panoramas, stunning landscapes, ethereal nymphs, mythical animals, marble porticos, castles and moats could be found everywhere."
