Informal experiments and " Fieldwork"
My meeting with Ossowiecki took place in circumstances of personal tragedy.
My father, who during the occupation worked with the government-in-exile, was arrested by the Gestapo on 9th April 1943 around noon, and taken to Aleja Szucha, where, probably during the night 9-10th April, he took poison, whose action turned out to be very much delayed. However, about 10 am on 10th April he was unexpectedly released. He got home about noon and very soon after lost consciousness. He died in the evening on 10th April, in the clinic Omega.
A meeting with Ossowiecki was arranged by Prof. Wolfke-a friend of my father and a fellow conspirator. The purpose was to obtain information about the interrogations. Ossowiecki took up an object which belonged to my father, and started talking. He described the cell in which father was kept, the position in which father sat writing the secret message (which we received later via a Polish policeman). O. also said that my father was arrested as a result of an untrue denunciation, the matter got cleared up, and the Germans knew nothing about father's real activities. That is why he was released. O. then described father's return home from Aleja Szucha to Lekarska 10, the time of day and how father looked when he was trying to get inside the house.
This description was then fully confirmed by statements from people who helped him on his tragic journey whom I succeeded in contacting. I reached-them on the basis of fragmentary statements made by my father to my mother before he lost consciousness.
After father died, the underground leadership instituted an investigation into the reasons for his arrest and the circumstances of his death. The investigation was conducted by Ktzimierz Moczarski on behalf of the Chief Command of the Home Army. This led to the discovery and execution of the denunciator, thus confirming O's statement about a denunciation having been made.
