Hasidic songs are considered to be the richest among all Jewish folksongs. The Hasidim are members of a mystic Jewish sect which flourished in eastern Europe, originally in the eastern Carpathians, in the middle of the eighteen century' The Hasidic songs are unique in character and form.
‘Niggun’ is the Hasidic term for a tune. Most niggunism are sung without any words, with the frequent use of carrier syllables such as Ah, Ay, Oy, Hey, Ya-ba-bam etc., (Hajdu and Mazor 1972, p. 1423) The tunes are mystical in character, and usually have a prayerful mood. ' -
