A description of the experience
George Sand writing about Alfred de Musset [from Manic Depression and Creativity – D Jablow Hershman and Dr Julian Lieb]
Once three months ago, he was as though mad for a whole night, as the result of great anxiety. He imagined he saw phantoms around him, and cried out in fear and horror. Now he is always uneasy and this morning he hardly knows what he says, or what he does. He weeps, complains of a trouble without name or cause, wants his own country and says he is near death or madness.
