Mrs. Ventresse (Devonshire, Great Britain) wrote me on November 28, 1968:
On Christmas Eve, I think 1956, but am not sure, we had decorated the cottage throughout with holly and mistletoe as usual and went to bed about midnight, and were soon asleep. To my astonishment I woke to hear children singing carols so sweetly nearby. I woke my husband, remarking it was surely too late for children to be abroad singing, even on Christmas Eve; the time was 1:45 a.m.
My husband went to the window and looked out, the night was brilliantly starlit and silent. Still, in memory I treasure the exquisite purity of those children's voices.
