Wolf Messing – the true story of Russia’s greatest psychic – Tatiana Lungin
… I ran away from school. At the time I was only eleven years old, but I understood that, from the railway station to where I headed, roads led in all directions. I reached the station so hungry that I couldn't resist digging up potatoes from a strangers garden and roasting them in the ashes of a fire. This was my second crime against the commandments: I stole.
While at the station I climbed onto the first train passing through, which, as it turned out, was headed for Berlin. There were only a few people in the coach, and therefore chances were greater of my being caught without a ticket. I climbed beneath the compartment seat, and there I slept. That was my final violation of society's laws. While sleeping I evidently stretched so that my legs struck out, and the first inspector passing by spied them.
Without standing on ceremony he asked me for my ticket.
I feverishly tried to think of a way out of the unpleasant situation.
My nerves were strained to the limit, and I shrunk into a tight ball, preparing to leap away like some forest lynx. I unconsciously picked up the first piece of paper that struck my eyes and handed it to him. Our gazes crossed. How I wanted him to accept that dirty scrap of paper for a ticket!
The inspector took it in his hands, twirled it around, and looked at me from beneath his brows. Still crouching in a little ball, I mentally suggested to him: 'It is a ticket ... a ticket ... a ticket ...'
The iron jaws of the ticket punch snapped. Handing the 'ticket' back to me and smiling benevolently, he asked me what I was doing under the seat!
That was the first time my power of suggestion manifested itself."
