Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Lowry's father died in 1932, leaving debts. His mother, subject to neurosis and depression, became bedridden and dependent on her son for care. Wick was painted in 1937 and Crowther street in 1930. Lowry's mother died in 1939.
Lowry - possibly unconsciously knew he had a long way to go spiritually and these two paintings capture the nature of the 'ascent'. Both places are real, but it is noticeable that Lowry placed himself at the bottom not at the top looking down. Only later did he show himself floating above the landscape as if he had ascended and was now on the top. These later pictures are filled wih Light.
