A description of the experience
The Poems of James Russell Lowell
Thou canst not see a shade in life
With sunward instinct thou dost rise
And leaving clouds below at strife
Gazest undazzled at the skies
With all their blazing splendours rife
A songful lark with eagle’s eyes
...................................
As through a strip of sunny light
A white dove flashes swiftly on
So suddenly before my sight
Thou gleam’st a moment and wert gone
And yet I long shall bear in mind
The pleasant thoughts thou left behind
