Background

A description of the experience

T C Lethbridge – ESP Beyond Time and Distance

Take somebody playing a beautiful air on a grand piano. You can see his hands, fingers and even his body working, and note the concentrated expression on his face. You can open the lid and watch the little hammers striking the taut wires. If you have the outlook of an archaeologist, you will note that the pianist is really playing an elaborated form of harp and recall the typology of the various more primitive instruments, which were the ancestors of that harp. You can observe the craftsmanship of the case, the tension of the wires and the padding of the hammers. If you were a doctor, you would note the general health of the pianist and remember how his bones, muscles and general physiology contributed to his playing. You could recall the laws of harmony, which tell you which series of notes sound well together.

And finally you could take both man and instrument to pieces down to the most minute detail and speculate on the protons and neutrons, which went to compose the whole. After all this you would not be one iota nearer to knowing why the air the musician played brought a lump in your throat and tears to your eyes. The feelings, which caused these things to happen, belong to another dimension. They can never be measured according to the rules of any known science.
