A description of the experience
T C Lethbridge – A Step in the Dark
On 4 April, 1966, I woke at about 7.30 a.m. and found myself trying to remember the poem Young Lochinvar, which I had been forced to learn at school. I found I was nearly word perfect and promptly dismissed the matter from my thoughts.
At about 10.30 a.m., three hours later, I looked at the paper. On the front page was a grim picture of the bow of a small stranded ship lying on her side and being hammered by heavy breakers. I read the account of how she had come to be in such a distressful situation.
She was called the Anzio and had come ashore nine miles from the mouth of the Humber with the loss of her crew of thirteen men. A note added that she had formerly been named the Lochinvar and built in 1906.
