Background
I have added my poem to the picture.
The painting actually shows a scene from Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare with Oberon king of the fairies in the half light and Titania his wife in the centre. But to me Titania looks in deep sorrow and the painting has a melancholy air about it. This wasn’t so surprising since Dadd had a tragic life, he killed his father in an act of madness and spent most of his life in an asylum.
A description of the experience
Without you, without you my world is so empty
Without you my life is so pointless and sad
No one, but no one, to love and to care for
No one, but no one, with whom to be glad
Alone, but with people surrounded, I flounder
Alone, but just drowning, in a sea of dreams
Alone on a raft of pure terror confounded
Alone and without you, how endless it seems
