Jean-Honoré FRAGONARD; Grasse, 1732 - Paris, 1806
‘The swarm of loves’ -This picture is perhaps that which Fragonard painted for his patron, the Farmer General J. - O. Bergeret de Grancourt, and shown in the Salon in 1767. Diderot’s comment about the composition was that: “It is a large and beautiful omelette of children”.
Little babies everywhere, round and clean and pink
Little babies plump and healthy, good as gold. …..I think
That little babies are a joy, that babies steal your heart
And I love making babies, come my sweetheart shall we start?
Making babies, making babies how many to create?
A hundred seems a nice round number, so why should we wait
Little babies, little babies, all of them like you
And some of them I guess like me, I suppose that too is true
Making babies, making life, could there be better pleasure?
For making love to you is bliss and life’s the greatest treasure
Little babies, little babies created from our love
Our love a gift from all the Gods that watch us from above
Little babies, little babies cuddly soft and dear
I’ll hold them to my naked breasts and protect them from all fear
And as they grow I’ll tell them that they owe their precious life
To the man I loved the most of all and would have been his wife
