Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
One evening in 1949, Gopi was strolling over a bridge with a friend. By this time he had been ‘suffering’ from the effects of the kundalini experience for 12 years, and tried all sorts of approaches – fasting, meditation, sleep deprivation which did not resolve it, but on the other hand did seem to propel him a little further in the transformation process.
In the middle of the conversation, a deep absorption settled on him and he lost touch with his surroundings and was no longer aware of the voice of his companion.
A description of the experience
As quoted in Dr Yvonne Kason – Farther Shores
Near me, in a blaze of brilliant light, I suddenly felt what seemed to be a mighty conscious presence sprung from nowhere encompassing me and overshadowing all the objects around, from which two lines of a beautiful verse in Kashmiri poured out to float before my vision, like luminous writing in the air, disappearing as suddenly as they had come.
When he repeated the lines, his friend was struck by their incredible beauty. Both of them were amazed, since Gopi Krishna had never evinced the slightest ability to write or compose poetry. This spontaneous, inspired creativity grew and developed over the years. In addition to the many books he wrote in prose, he composed several books entirely in beautiful and powerfully moving verse. One, The Shape of Events to Come, was written in less than three weeks. Over the years, he was also the recipient of prophecy and revelation. He eventually came to live in a state of perennial expanded consciousness while being able to function in the everyday world. In his autobiography, he described points of even deeper absorption:
Language fails me when I attempt to describe the experience… my lustrous conscious self is floating, with but an extremely dim idea of the corporeal frame in a vividly bright conscious plane, every fragment of which represents, past, and future, commanding all the sciences, philosophies, and arts ever known or that will be known in the age to come, all concentrated and contained in a point existing here and everywhere, now and always, a formless, measureless ocean of wisdom from which, drop by drop knowledge has filtered and will continue to filter into the human brain. On every visit to the supersensible realm I am so overwhelmed by the mystery and the wonder of it that everything conceived in this world…above all even my own existence, life and death, appear to be trite and trivial before the indescribable glory, the unfathomable mystery, and the unimaginable extent of the marvellous ocean of life, of which I am at times permitted to approach the shore.
