Knight, Dame Laura – Ballet and theatre – 01
Identifier
024375
Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
During 1920 and 1921 Laura met and painted backstage some of the most famous ballet dancers of the day from Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Subjects included Lydia Lopokova, Anna Pavlova and the dance teacher Enrico Cecchetti.
Knight also painted backstage, and in the dressing rooms, at Birmingham Repertory Theatre productions.
A considerable amount of symbolism is based on theatre, the play and the final curtain, which Laura appears to be well aware of given her attraction to Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
