Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

A description of the experience

from The World Guide to Fairies, Gnomes etc [compiled by Thomas Keightley]

There are numerous legends of people entering the spirit world and being 'out of time'.  In Otmar's Voksagen there is a German legend of Peter Klaus, who slept a sleep of 20 years in the bowling green of the Kyffhauser.  This story was used by Washington Irving to create the story of Ripp van Winkle.  Similar stories are to be found in the Highlands of Scotland and in the Irish Legend of Cliough na Cuddy and the 'Seven Sleepers'.
