Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Some people in NDEs go to a sort of ‘holding area’. It tends to be about as close as possible to their idea of paradise - often characterised by being a place of great beauty, with brilliantly glowing colours, apparently warm and often with other worldly but wonderful music.
Often it is a green place, with lush grass and thousands of flowers, with brilliant blue sky and wooded, warm, no houses, the occasional palace or temple, sometimes mountains or hills, occasionally a gentle warm wind. It is a virtual world constructed for us - a holding area with which we would be familiar - a sort of virtual familiar world with which we can identify and feel the most at home.
Scenes of pastoral earthly like beauty were reported by 11 people in Dr Michael Sabom’s early studies.
A description of the experience
Recollections of death – Dr Michael Sabon
This 55 year old textile mill labourer encountered the following during a cardiac arrest in 1979.
During this vision that I had, I couldn’t see myself but I was standing on something high because down below me there was just the most beautiful greenest pasture. There was just a small hill and then just flat meadow over to my right… I was looking down on these cattle and sheep and on this shepherd, and they were in a meadow like, with cattle on the right and sheep on the left, and he was standing on just like a rounded knoll twenty or thirty feet high … it was just like a bright sunshiny day… the whole outline of it looked like a putting green on a well kept golf course. …. It is just so stamped in my mind that it will never go away.
Life at Death – Dr Kenneth Ring
From a cardiac arrest victim
I happened to go down this path and it was beautiful. Beautiful flowers and the birds were singing, and I was walking down. [After she was resuscitated] I did reprimand my surgeon and my cardiologist. I said 'why in heaven's name did you bring me back? It was so beautiful'
