Rosalind Heywood – The Infinite Hive
One morning in the late forties, very shortly after a stroke of fate had removed our main source of income, I drove my husband to our solicitor's office next door to Sunningdale station, where he had to discuss the resultant sale of our family home. His intention was, after the interview, to catch a train to London which went an hour or so later, but as soon as I left he found that the man he was to meet had been prevented from coming. In consequence he had nothing to do but kick his heels for at least an hour - and there is no better way of causing him to provide emotional fuel than having to kick his heels when very busy at a time of crisis.
I, meanwhile, was driving home along a quiet country road which I knew blindfold; my mind, in other words, was mildly occupied but not engrossed.
About half a mile away Orders said sharply, 'Go back at once. He wants you,' at which I was not pleased. It made no sense. We had talked over what he would say to the solicitor. I had seen him in at the door, I was busy at home, and the road was twisty, narrow and tiresome to turn in. But Orders insisted, and rebelliously I drove on to a farm gate, turned and went back.
When I got to the solicitors I found a frustrated husband on the doorstep. I was quite popular.
