Background

A description of the experience

Rosalind Heywood – The Infinite Hive

I had a sharp lesson … under mescaline.  With my eyes bandaged I was given a folded letter and asked to comment on the writer.

After holding it for a moment, I threw it away with a shriek.  I could not bear it.  It made me feel suffocated, stifled, drowned in what at the time I described, sobbing, as the horrible dark brown treacle of a man’s anger.

And what was so hateful, I could not cleanse myself of it for a long time.

To the doctor who gave me the drug the letter did not convey an impression of such anger and he reported my reaction to its writer.  He replied that it fitted the facts.

While writing the letter, he had been trying to control his violent indignation at a particularly unfortunate incident at his place of work.
