The traffic had become rarer, and an aspect grew upon it of panic flight, as if from a dull and distant glare, which perhaps was only the night glow of Reading’s lamps.
But I could only think of hot ruins and bursting walls. A sort of dread seemed to encroach across the land from that quarter, as a flame burns its way across a paper; and whatever could escape, fled guiltily from this horror. The fields and trees were dreary symbols of poverty, all the propitious spirits of earth had forsaken them, and the hovels or cottages were as lamp glasses quite blackened with soot
