Once I was aware of the sensation of a confused noise, as of a crowd trying to escape from a fire, yet a noise so small as to be actually inaudible, only one’s mind picked up the quality, shape and sense of it.
Some motes of dust seemed to fall from a ventilator, high up, and I noticed how much that grille was like a barred window. But what was thrown out had been pieces of miniature luggage. Then arms and legs were thrust through, and higgledy piggledy a whole family of excited Irish country folk appeared, each no larger than one’s thumb, scrambled through and jumped. At first their forms were distinguishable as shrimps are seen in water, but falling 2 feet towards the floor, they vanished
