PART II. THE EMOTIONS.
CHAPTER VIII. INFLUENCE OF THE EMOTIONS UPON THE VOLUNTARY MUSCLES.
SECTION II. — Irregular and Excessive Muscular Contraction : Spasms and Convulsions.
Vocal spasm [stammering and stuttering) are constantly aggravated by bashfulness, while the courage excited by an emergency may remove them, as happened with Charles I, who, though a stammerer, is said to have been entirely free from the affection when he spoke at his trial.
" Stammering," Marshall Hall observes, "would scarcely exist without emotion," and he likens it to the nervous tremor which often renders it almost impossible for some persons even to sign their name in public.
